On April 25, Mr. Shi wrote to Chinese Consulate at San Francisco, volunteering to go back to Beijing to fight SARS. His letter read: "I am a post-doctorate researcher in the medical School of Stanford University studying respiratory and critical iatrology. I have been working at internal medicine department, infective disease department and respiratory disease department in domestic hospitals for many years before I came to America. Recently I learned from TV and the internet that our country is being attacked by SARS. Seeing so many medical workers having been infected, I'm very upset. I believe Beijing now needs medical workers with rich clinical experience treating respiratory disease, so I hope leaders at our consulate will allow me to go back to work at the front line against SARS - Beijing, so that I can make my personal contribution to our motherland."

This entreating letter finally reached Ditan Hospital. Leaders of the hospital made prompt contact with Mr. Shi. On May 16, Mr. Shi arrived in Beijing. Despite of his jet lag, he reported at the hospital in the afternoon. Considering the nature of his job in US and according to his own will, he was assigned to work at SARS wards and Virus Research Center.
